Many parents would answer, “Of course it is, dear!” Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but it’s not quite so. We created a very curious and educational project for Jolife’s little fans about the fruit most loved by children: the strawberry.
The project is presented to primary school classes and involves looking together at a series of images taken directly from the fields (either outdoors or in small/large tunnels) from when the plant is first planted until the strawberries are harvested—often oddly shaped or so large they make even the farmers smile after years of cultivation. Mulching, propagation by runners, irrigation nozzles, pesky pests, friendly bees… all the various stages are shown as if observing a real field at that moment.
Unfortunately, these things are not obvious to our little ones who have become too (or only) computerized citizens. It’s wonderful to see their surprised little eyes in front of these natural mysteries.
The same story, narrated with slides, is given to each child as an illustrated booklet that they can reread at home with their family and color during free time.
After answering the hundreds of curious questions from the students, we warm up our voices and launch into our legendary ‘VITAMIN RAP’!
Curious? Ask your school for a JOLIFE session called “THE STORY OF STRAWBERRIES FROM THE EARTH… TO THE TABLE” and we’ll come sing there too ?
But we don’t want to leave you in doubt… so: is the strawberry a fruit? NO, the strawberry is only the enlargement of the receptacle; the true fruits are the ACHENES, which are the tiny white/yellowish dots covering the red part.
Long live strawberries!
